Liquor & Gaming NSW Urges Licensed Venues to Ensure Compliance and Safety on Anzac Day
As Anzac Day approaches, Liquor & Gaming NSW advises licensed venues across the state to implement proper measures for safe and responsible commemorations, particularly regarding the traditional game of two-up and crowd management.
As Anzac Day draws near, Liquor & Gaming NSW is calling upon licensed venues throughout the state to adequately prepare and implement appropriate measures to ensure safe and responsible commemorations. The regulatory body emphasizes the importance of managing the unique challenges that arise on this significant day, including larger than normal crowds and the traditional game of two-up.
Two-up, a coin-tossing game typically considered illegal as an unregulated form of gambling, is legally permitted on Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, and Victory in the Pacific Day as a tribute to World War I veterans. While venues do not require a permit to host two-up, Jane Lin, Liquor & Gaming NSW Executive Director of Regulatory Operations, encourages them to fully understand and observe the traditional rules of the game.
Lin stated, "Two-up is a great Australian tradition and a way for people to come together at pubs and clubs to enjoy the Anzac spirit. While venues do not need a permit to host two-up, they are encouraged to fully understand and observe the traditional rules of the coin-tossing game."
In addition to properly managing the game of two-up, licensed venues are reminded to address potential risks associated with larger crowds, increased rates of intoxication, gambling disputes, extended high-volume trading, and special Anzac Day liquor promotions. Liquor & Gaming NSW emphasizes the importance of prioritizing safety and compliance to ensure a respectful and enjoyable commemoration.
This advisory from Liquor & Gaming NSW comes amidst their ongoing efforts to uphold regulatory standards in the gambling industry. Earlier this year, the regulator made headlines by imposing fines totaling AU$210,000 (US$136,674) on Betr for illegal gambling advertisements, marking the largest fine ever issued in NSW history for this offense. In response to an increase in fines issued since 2016, Liquor & Gaming NSW has implemented a new fine structure to address non-compliance.
As licensed venues across NSW prepare for Anzac Day celebrations, it is crucial that they heed the advice of Liquor & Gaming NSW and take proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of patrons. By implementing proper measures, understanding the rules of two-up, and managing potential risks, these establishments can play a vital role in facilitating respectful and enjoyable commemorations while upholding the highest standards of compliance.
Liquor & Gaming NSW's commitment to maintaining regulatory standards and promoting responsible gambling practices serves as a reminder to all licensed venues of their obligation to prioritize the safety and well-being of their patrons. As the state comes together to honor the sacrifices of its veterans, it is essential that these celebrations are conducted in a manner that reflects the solemnity and significance of Anzac Day.
